MRS. Z. DAVIS’ STUDY SKILLS SYLLABUS

8th & 7th Grade

Room 7-10

Objectives: This course is designed to help students develop and use study skills that will help them become successful learners. Students will learn various techniques that will be helpful to them throughout their academic years.

  • Time management and organization of materials
  • Reading strategies and text structure
  • Learning styles
  • Note taking from a lecture and from text
  • Test preparation and test taking strategies
  • Research process: choosing and narrowing a topic, taking notes, writing and revising a research project

Materials: A wide variety of supplemental materials, such as magazine articles, content area textbooks, content area workbooks, online resources, and printed handouts will be used to help students develop study skills.

Requirements: Students are responsible for bringing the following items each day: a pencil, paper, his/her planner, and any assignments due. Students are expected to actively participate in all class activities.

B                      92-85

C                      84-75

D                      74-67

F                      66 or below

Absences: If a student is absent, it is HIS/HER responsibility to get late work from the teacher and return in a timely manner.

Classroom Rules to Remember

PerseveranceStudents may not say, “I can’t, I won’t, and it’s too hard.”  We never give up.

Respect Students must respect themselves, their peers, and adults.  Verbal or nonverbal disrespect will not be tolerated.  We treat others how we want to be treated.

IntegrityStudents will be honest.  Cheating, lying, and stealing are not permitted.  We do the right thing and make good choices.

DisciplineStudents are expected to follow directions and do their work.  Goofing around or causing distractions in the classroom is not acceptable.  We understand there is a time for fun and time for focus.

ExcellenceStudents will always give their best effort and strive for improvement.  We never settle for less than we are capable of achieving.

Possible Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior

1.  Verbal Warning – Students will be reminded of the rule and advised to make a better choice.

2. Meeting with Student – Students will meet with Mrs. Davis or Mrs. Willie Mae Johnson to discuss issues and options for remediation and better choices.

3. Parent notification – Parents will be called.

4. Minor/Major Referral – A formal write up on the student’s action will be submitted to the principal.

5.  Parent Meeting/Administration Intervention – In school suspension (ISS) or Out of school suspension (S) may be given to the student by administration for extreme misbehaviors or repetition of rule breaking. Parents may be called in to meet with Mrs. Willie Mae Johnson.   Administration may or may not be present.*Any consequences outlined above may be skipped or amended due to the severity of the issue.
